What’s Up At Jane’s: Feb 2014
It seems like the year just started. It’s hard to believe it’s already February! Here’s a little peek at our year so far:
A Letter from our Director:
Each day our referral attorneys do more than just advocate for our clients in court. Last month, attorneys representing minors in judicial bypass cases also devoted hours to driving the clients to and from court and providing them food and appropriate attire. One attorney even found a mechanic willing to go to the home of a young woman whose car would not start. This young woman is on her own juggling school and work. She pays for all of her living expenses. She could not involve a parent; Her mom lives out of state and a while back, her dad abandoned the family. While this 17-year-old has a safe place to stay, she is basically raising herself.
“She is struggling financially and it seemed that it was the least I could do to help her get back on her feet,” said her attorney. “If the repair is more than she can handle, I will ask some of my colleagues to kick in and help cover the costs.”
As more clinics close due to HB 2, circumstances are particularly grim in the Rio Grande Valley and West Texas. Our attorneys and volunteers are stepping up to help those in crisis.

Thank you, Louise, for six years of service!
Louise Hytken of Dallas has served six years on the Jane’s Due Process board — four, as board president. Louise offered wise guidance to the JDP staff and board, juggling her pro bono work among us with a demanding position as an attorney in the tax division of the U.S. Department of Justice. Dr. Aletha Huston of Austin is the new boardpresident. Check out the pics of our party celebrating Louise’s leadership and service
