This week we are happy to share a video with a personal story from a Jane about her experience with Jane’s Due Process, and the assistance provided by our staff.
Due to confidentiality concerns, we cannot always share individual stories publicly, so we hope that you will hear this Jane’s particular story, beautifully animated by Steven Nelson. She’d been with her partner for over a year, but didn’t know what to do when she became pregnant unexpectedly. She found support navigating financial, emotional, and logistical hurdles thanks to Jane’s Due Process.
In the state of Texas, minors are required to have consent from their parents or legal guardians to obtain abortion services (or contraception, unless given by a Title X clinic, but more on that here). But many minors face the potential for emotional or physical abuse or retribution by informing their parents of an unwanted pregnancy. To assist in these cases, minors may request a judicial bypass, a completely confidential order from a judge that allows minors to obtain abortion services without the consent of their parents or guardians. Jane’s Due Process helps minors who seek judicial bypass by connecting them with access to free legal services and advice on navigating the system. If you’d like to read more about the specifics on judicial bypass for minors in Texas and why it matters, check out our past post here.
We hope you enjoy her story.
Please know that if you are a minor in Texas with questions or concerns about an unplanned pregnancy, you can always contact Jane’s Due Process for resources and support at our hotline: 866-999-5263.
