Question: I’ve never had sex, but I recently started masturbating. But I’ve seen people say that it’s not good for you, and sometimes I don’t feel well afterward. I do enjoy it, and I feel like learning about my body and what feels good has been good for me. BUT…is it possible that it could be making me sick?
This is a great question, thank you for submitting it!
Self-pleasure, or masturbation, is normal and common
. Studies show that masturbation reduces stress, promotes sleep, relieves pain, improves mood, and so much more!
The idea that masturbation is “bad for you” is rooted in fear and ignorance of human sexuality. Masturbation cannot cause diseases, infections, or any type of sickness, unless you’re using something that is unsanitary, so remember to always wash your hands and toys before the self-love! Self-pleasure doesn’t have a set amount of times you can engage with it; it’s actually healthy to incorporate it into your daily routine (if you want to)! However, if you find that masturbation is interrupting your life negatively, then creating a schedule may be helpful.
There is a lot of negative stigma and shame surrounding masturbation, but it is only that way because of how society engages with it. I invite you to remind yourself next time that pleasure is your birthright and you are allowed to experience pleasure in your body, as many times as you want, without shame.
