2014 was a tough year. With the implementation of House Bill 2, along with the severe family planning cuts from 2011, many young women in Texas were hit hard–unable to access contraception or abortion services. At Jane’s Due Process, we are dedicated to ensuring the legal rights for all pregnant teens in Texas, and we’re proud of our impact in 2014.
Here are a few highlights from our 2014 Impact Report (view full report here):
- We fielded close to 1,000 calls from pregnant teens seeking information about their legal rights and pregnancy options
- We assisted 281 young women from 55 different counties who needed help with judicial bypass
- 39% of these young women did not live with a parent or legal guardian (most of the parents were missing, deceased, incarcerated or deported)
- 16% had experienced a previous pregnancy
- 11% were already parenting one or more children
- Almost 75% of the teens seeking judicial bypass were 17 years of age
- The top 5 reasons a parent could not be notified of a pregnancy were (not in any order):
- Teen was an orphan de facto
- Parent would force teen to continue pregnancy
- Teen would be kicked out of home
- Parent was in personal or family crisis
- Teen was in danger of abuse
