Young people deserve access to comprehensive healthcare, including mental and emergency healthcare.
Proposition 15, on the ballot in Texas this November, could jeopardize young people’s access to this care by creating unnecessary barriers and delays.
Proposition 15 sets the stage for TX legislature to pass more harmful legislation and for legal challenges that could ultimately put a skewed vision of “parents rights” before SCOTUS–both with the following potential implications:
- Decrease youth access to mental healthcare
- Decrease youth access to emergency care
- Increase censorship in schools
- Increase family policing
- Harm to youth access to gender affirming care
- Harm to youth access to abortion and contraception
Parent’s rights are already protected under Texas law and have been for years, yet legislators continue to use the guise of “parents rights” to pass harmful policies. We saw this harm when SB 12 went into effect this past September, leading to chaos, confusion, and censorship in schools.
We know it is a hard and scary time to be a parent and a young person! We want to keep young people safe and ensure every family has the freedom to decide what’s best for themselves. Jane’s Due Process encourages everyone who cares about youth autonomy and wellbeing to vote NO on Prop. 15!
